Environmental issues

SLOVNAFT, a.s. and Slovnaft Petrochemicals, s.r.o. hold ISO certificates for Quality Management, Environmental Management, and Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. In accordance with these standards, both companies have implemented processes for the identification and evaluation of environmental aspects and security risks, as well as their management. The companies reconfirmed the validity of these certificates during the 2008 surveillance audit.

The following part deals with the main environmental impacts of Slovnaft Group activities.

Air protection

Compared to 2007, there has been an almost 3% decrease in air emissions, mostly resulting from reduced SO2 emissions.

Greenhouse gas emissions

At the beginning of 2008, according to the audited CO2 emission report for 2007, the Company delivered 2,250,495 tons of emission allowances to the National Emission Register, thus completing the first trading period 2005-2007 with a slight surplus of 138,000 tons of emission allowances.

Water protection

The most important projects in 2008 which were aimed at decreasing the amount of pollutants released into water include the increased efficiency of the biological stage of the wastewater treatment plant, and the renewal of the chemical water treatment plant. These investments amounted to almost SKK 160 million.

Soil and underground water protection

To protect soil and ground water, the Company has been operating a hydraulic underground water protection (HGWP) system for over 30 years. Through this system, the Company pumped up 1.4 tons of oil substances from the subsoil in 2008.

Waste Management

Compared to 2007, the waste volume in Slovnaft Group increased by 3%. The so-called hazardous waste was connected with realised investment and consisted of soil contaminated by crude oil substances. The entire volume was disposed of during the year. The other waste consisted of uncontaminated concrete and soil and it volume almost halved.

Reach

Since the beginning of 2008 the data gathering needed for pre-registration of chemical substances in accordance with REACH regulation (registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals) was performed with the aim of ensuring the preparedness of Slovnaft Group companies for the beginning of the pre-registration period in June 2008.
